Motorcyclists of all standards appreciate this pleasure-filled route – the 16.5 km mountain route has a leisurely ten percent gradient, seven elegant bends and numerous gently sweeping turns. From the starting point in Villach-Möltschach up the end point, the Rosstratte parking lot, riders take in 1200 metres of ascent on this motorbike tour, which features inviting view-packed stops at several sections. Extra service for bikers included.

Villach Alpine Road is not open to motorcyclists between 20:00 and 7:00.

Safety & Services: only the best for our bikers!

Motorbike riding on Villach Alpine Road is not only a total joy, it is also really safe and there are additional services available for bikers.

The roadway is six metres wide throughout, providing a perfect overview and opportunity for better side-by-side riding.

Particular attention is paid to the road surface. If upgrades are made to the road, only material which provides maximum grip is used, in particular when repairing any cracks on the bends.

The existing guard rails on bends have been equipped with additional crash barriers close to the ground. These cover the guard rail posts which can be dangerous for motorcyclists.

The Biker’s Safes at the Alpengarten and Rosstratte car parks provide additional safety features. You can store items of equipment, such as your helmet, jacket and gloves, mostly free of charge while you visit one of the experience worlds or enjoy a refreshment stop in one of the inns. All the Alpine inns and guesthouse are ‘biker-friendly’ after all!

Fantastic views open up from each of the 11 rest points in total. We have compiled some highlights for your motorbike tour here.

More safety for motorcyclists

GROHAG, the operator of Villach Alpine Road and other Austrian experience roads, continually endeavour to increase safety and driving pleasure for motorcyclists. On the one hand, using targeted measures directly on the road, including underride barriers with guide rails, and ongoing checks of the grip of the asphalt and ensuring an even lateral profile.

And on the other, with training and information on how to ride properly in the mountains provided by ÖAMTC.

We have compiled a few of the most important tips for safe motorbike riding on mountain roads here:

  • Only drive when rested and with full concentration – motorcycling is sport.
  • Have your motorbike annually checked by a professional and ensure it is continually maintained (brake fluid, lights, tyre pressure, smooth chain drive).
  • Only ride in safety clothing: helmet, trousers and jacket with protectors, boots and gloves.
  • Practice this viewing technique: keep the road the surroundings in your line of sight and drive with foresight.
  • Wear clothing which is visible and avoid blind spots behind cars.
  • Train yourself to master your bike and technique taking the bends – preferably with ride safety training, especially at the start of the season.
  • Choose a riding style that is suitable and in line with the weather conditions.
  • Never ride to your limit and always be mindful of obstacles.
  • Remember: Safety & riding fun are inseparable!
