The green Alpengarten

Alpengarten on the Dobratsch

10,000 m² of natural garden with 800 alpine plants on the Villach Alpine Road

Even back during the ground-breaking ceremony for the mountain road on 3 July 1961, the then mayor Gottfried Timmerer suggested establishing an alpine garden on the Dobratsch. Nature lovers enthusiastically embraced the idea, founding the “Alpengarten Villacher Alpe” association in 1966. Visitors to the impressive panoramic road were to be given the chance to get to know the alpine flora; preserving and propagating rare plants has been another goal to this very day. The 1.2 hectare site between the Villach Alpine Road and the brim of the Schütt is located at an altitude of 1,500 m only a few steps from car park P6.
